Abstract:
Pulsar magnetospheres are poorly understood. In this talk I will focus on some of the more recent work relating to radio observations of single pulse variability and polarization. These observations show that pulsar magnetospheres are highly dynamical environments that vary on a global scale, which are therefore difficult to model theoretically. I will present a challenging observation for an established theory to explain some of the periodical variability seen we see in pulsars, and a potential solution. Polarization studies are useful to get geometrical
information about pulsars, and I will discuss difficulties in understanding their magnetic inclination angle distribution. Finally, time permitting, I will argue that pulsar magnetospheres might be linked to neutron-star interiors, thereby making pulsars even more difficult to understand theoretically.
